Cholderton Estate Residency,
Hampshire, 2021.
During 2021, Sally Newton was Artist in Residence at Cholderton Estate. The Estate bordering Hampshire and Wiltshire is an organic farm promoting sustainable farming and land management practices, and has provided a wealth of creative avenues for exploration around Sally’s subjects of life and land.
‘Whilst most of her work is made in situ, even when it’s bottom clinchingly cold and muddy, Sally has recently embarked on some ambitious landscapes, which currently sit directly in my eyeline. Telling stories of the surrounding landforms and reliefs, these pieces not only feel moving but also well inhabited, part of the dialogue that stretches back millennia.’
Elizabeth Tyler (Landscape Designer and Writer) in an article for Our Isles about the residency.
Throughout the project, Sally developed a portfolio which responds to, and marks, the rural year. Her work on the residency has included sensitive reflections on the livestock and wildlife which inhabit the land as well as dramatic paintings, drawings and a bronze sculpture which celebrate the beautiful, ancient landscape.
The final exhibition of her work related to this project will be held on the 2 - 3 April 2022, at Kingsettle Stud, Cholderton. Sally regularly shares updates on the project through her instagram feed.
